Dr. Amarjeet Kaur is an Assistant Professor of Kathak at the Punjabi University. She teaches Kathak to the students and has been contributing her bit to Kathak for the last twelve years. She worked for a few years as an Assistant Professor at the Kurukshetra University and later on cleared ICCR and then went to Beijing as a Kathak Dancer and Teacher.
Amarjeet says that she belongs to a Sikh family and the Sikh families do not encourage classical dance. However, her family was supportive enough for her to pursue her career in the classical dance field.
Recalling her childhood memories, Amarjeet says that she had been interested in dancing since her childhood. She says that she was not that aware of Kathak but always used to participate in dance competitions in school and college. She further adds that when she gained some knowledge about Kathak, she finally decided to pursue her career in the field. She discovered that the Government College of Ludhiana had Kathak Dance as a subject and took admission to the college and started her dance journey from there. Then she did her masters from Punjabi University, Patiala, and completed her Ph.D. thereafter.
Sharing about her interest in dancing, Amarjeet says that her father had a transferable job and, due to that, she has been to various regions all over India. She says that she has enough knowledge of the cultures of various cities and has been observing the different art forms since her childhood. She was very fascinated by dancing since then but never thought of it as a career opportunity. However, eventually, she started learning the dance form and took it as her career.
When asked about her journey, Amarjeet says that she started her dancing journey with her graduation and has been a continuous learner since then. She says that she started her journey with graduation, then pursued a masters, and then went for P.h.D. along with her job as an Assistant Professor of Kathak. She believes that dance is the field in which one can learn more while teaching, rather than just practicing it alone. She further adds that dancing is a continuous process and demands hard work and dedication.
Amarjeet says that she has always been a very focused person and believes in learning from the mistakes of others in her surroundings.
Regarding her mistakes, Amarjeet says that one makes mistakes in their journey. She says that one of the big mistakes people make is trusting people easily. However, she is a person who believes in parting ways with the people who try to stop her growth in any way.
Talking about her achievements, Amarjeet says that coming from a Sikh family, pursuing Kathak as a career is itself an achievement for her. She feels fortunate enough to have the courage of turning her passion into her profession. Performing in the ICCR, teaching Kathak, and receiving an award from the Haryana Film Industry are other achievements for her. Additionally, getting a Yuva Ratna recognition from the Art and Culture organization is also an accomplishment for her.
Talking about her role models, Amarjeet says that her teachers have been her role models. She says that she has learned everything from her guru and has been following her path since then.
To aspiring classical dancers, Amarjeet says that one first needs to set a goal for where they want to reach in the field. After setting a goal, you should do some research, find an appropriate teacher, choose the profession as a teacher or performer, and then move forward in the field.
To deal with stress, Amarjeet prefers dancing when she is sad or even when she is happy. She says that she dances to make herself free from stress.
When asked about her life mantra, Amarjeet says that she closely follows being focused on a single direction and avoids getting distracted from her goal.
