Dr. Alpesh Kothari is a general surgeon and an assistant professor in the Department of General Surgery at RNT Medical College in Udaipur.
Alpesh originally hails from Rishabhdeo, a town in Udaipur. He studied till eighth grade in Rishabhdeo itself. Then he moved to Udaipur to complete the remainder of his school education.
Recollecting his childhood, Alpesh says that he is reminiscent of playing outdoors with his friends. He says his father would often scold him for playing and not studying instead. However, he says that playing with his friends taught him team building which today helps in his profession too.
Alpesh shares that it was his father’s dream to see him become a doctor. However, as a kid, he always wanted to either become a businessman or work in some managerial position. He half-heartedly opted for the science-bio stream in high school. But, when he interacted with his teachers and other people in his hometown, he realized that the way he could serve people and the impact he could create in society by becoming a doctor, would not be possible through any other profession. And it emboldened his spirit to become a doctor. He studied diligently and after completing his MBBS, he also did his masters in general surgery.
Alpesh shares that after completing his masters, instead of the private sector, he joined the government sector to fulfill his objective of giving back to society. He started working at the government satellite hospital in Hiran Magri, Udaipur. Thereafter, he joined as an assistant professor in the department of general surgery at RNT Medical College in Udaipur itself and has been rendering his services there ever since.
Talking about his challenges, Alpesh shares that when he moved to Udaipur for his further school education, he had to live in a hostel and take care of himself all by himself which was initially quite challenging for him. Besides, some people tried to demoralize him by saying that the medical profession was an extremely tough and competitive profession and chances of success in it were very less. However, he says that his father always motivated him, and because of his support only he could continue his studies and become a doctor.
Alpesh aspires to open up a hospital in his hometown to provide people over there with good medical facilities.
Alpesh thinks that more than education and experience, it’s your focus on your goals that matters and that makes you successful. He says, our energy is limited and it’s paramount to remain focused on our goals. To aspiring doctors, he advises them to remain focused on their goals from the beginning itself and if they remain focused on their goals then sooner or later they will surely achieve them.
Talking about his achievements, Alpesh says that being able to help and connect with people through his profession is his biggest achievement.
Alpesh says that he was not a born leader. He learned to work with people and manage them with time and experience, and it helped him acquire his leadership skills.
Even if he had a Time Machine and could undo things in his past by going back in time, Alpesh would still want to become a doctor as he thinks that being a doctor gives him the utmost satisfaction.
Reviewing his COVID experience, Alpesh says that the pandemic was a turmoil for everyone. He lost some of his loved ones during the pandemic. However, he says, the pandemic taught us the importance of human values like helping one another, and it also gave us a reality check that nothing is above the laws of nature.
In his spare time, Alpesh likes to go on outings with his friends and spend time with them. Besides, he also likes to read motivational books.
