Ajit had a strong desire to become a doctor since his childhood and worked hard to achieve that goal. He continued to expand his area of expertise to assist and serve more and more people.

Dr. Ajit Singh is a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Paras Health Care Hospital, Udaipur.

After completing his MBBS in Kerala, Ajit went to Jodhpur to specialize in general surgery. He obtained his Apex Degree in Neurosurgery from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Thereafter, he worked in hospitals at various places. For the past ten years, he has been providing his services in Udaipur.

Recalling his childhood, Ajit says that he has lived across the country as his father was in the army and got transferred frequently. He has lived in Pathankot, Haryana and Ambala. After his father’s retirement, they settled in Jaipur, where he spent most of his childhood and completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya. He got inclined towards the medical field as it is one of the most respected professions, and at the same time, you get to serve people as a doctor.

Ajit describes a neurosurgeon as a specially trained medical doctor who diagnoses and treats conditions that affect your nervous system—your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Neurosurgeons perform surgery on your nervous system, but they can also provide nonsurgical treatments. He talks about when surgery is needed and also discusses brain tumors.

Ajit suggests consulting a doctor if you detect symptoms like an early morning headache and vomiting, if you experience signs of paralysis, and if you are having fits. He also blames the modern corporate style of working, where we are engaged with computer screens and phones and sitting on a chair the entire day, which increases the risk of chronic injury to our bodies, like weakening of muscles and bones.

When asked about his role models, Ajit says he does not consider any one person as his role model, like other people usually do. He says he considers AIIMS, the institute where he did his specialization, as his role model as he not only learnt about neurosurgery there, but also learnt how to manage the administration of a hospital and how to handle a large number of patients. The institute has taught him the importance of striking a work-life balance.

Ajit believes that if you want to achieve your goal, you must constantly think and find ways to achieve it. He further says that when he got posted to his government job, he realized that he was not doing justice to his profession as the hospital was not equipped with operation theaters and the latest technology. As he was interested in neurosurgery, he started learning about it, and gave certain entrance exams for AIIMS. He tried but could not qualify for the interview. But he trusted his caliber and again gave the exam. He finally got selected due to his determination and became a neurosurgeon. He also advises others to keep working until they reach their goals. He feels that you get to enjoy your life to the fullest when your work becomes your passion.

To all the medical students, Ajit says do not think less of any course; focus and deeply learn about what you are doing right now. He encourages students to focus on their MBBS program in order to gain an understanding of every branch, which would be beneficial when they opt to specialize in their field. Do not ever try to take shortcuts, and learn everything with your whole heart because one mistake can prove fatal in this field.

To all the youngsters, Ajit advises them to give their best in whatever they do. Be the first one to bring a change for making our country a better place to live in, he says.
