Choose a career that you enjoy, and you'll never look back.
Dr. Kunjan Acharya is the Head Incharge of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Mohanlal Sukhadia University in Udaipur.
Kunjan was born in Chittorgarh and raised in a small village near Udaipur. His father being in a government job, Kunjan completed his schooling at different schools and believes that the resources and facilities provided by government schools are as good as those provided by private schools. Having studied both in a village and a city school, Kunjan believes that in village schools, there are resources but no vision or proper guidance.
Recalling his childhood, Kunjan says that he has been surrounded by a literary environment since childhood, with his father being a great poet and an astrologer. He wrote his first poem in the fourth grade, which was published in a newspaper, and he was extremely happy about it. He shares that once, when he was seeking admission to a school, he was given a test to design a wedding invitation, which he did easily. Impressed by his skills, he was called by the school teachers, wherein he confessed his love for literature and poems and recited one of them, and he was soon admitted to the school.
Talking about his journey, Kunjan shares that he has been weak at maths, having received supplementary in his eighth and ninth grades. However, his maths teacher took responsibility, and he cleared his 10th standard without failing in the subject. After clearing his tenth, his father decided to make him a doctor, but he wanted to learn literature. Thereafter, he underwent a psychology test, the results of which indicated his inclination towards literature, political science, or becoming a teacher, journalist, or judge. He was happy to see the results of the test. He decided to become a journalist and started planning newspapers in the tenth grade itself.
Afterwards, he took up English literature, Hindi literature, and Political Science as his subjects in the eleventh grade and continued the same until graduation. One of his articles got published in a newspaper, of which he was extremely proud, and he wanted to work for the newspaper as a full-time job. Impressed by his work, the organisation offered him a job but wanted him to join only after completing his twelfth. As soon as his board exams got over, he joined the job and took admission to the BA programme at Mohanlal Sukhadia University.
One fine day, Kunjan came across an advertisement in the newspaper about Rajasthan Patrika needing trainee journalists, and he applied for it. He shares that his eligibility was BA, and since his result was not out yet, he decided to write a letter to the Managing Director to ask him to consider his case. Very soon, he appeared for the entrance and also passed the interview with flying colours.
Thereafter, Kunjan decided to get himself registered for a PhD, and during that time, Dainik Bhaskar had been launched in the city, and he decided to join it for a career change. Meanwhile, he also started teaching as a guest faculty member at the college.
In 2001, with the advent of television and FM Radio Mirchi, Kunjan realised television was a better platform than newspapers, possessing the capability to alter one’s heart, mind, and thoughts. He came across an advertisement in The Times of India regarding ETV's need for senior journalists. Fortunately, he got selected, and after working there for a year, he was made the Head of the channel in 2005. After completing his PhD, he came across the post of Assistant Professor at Mohanlal Sukhadia University in 2012 for just one post, and with God’s grace, he grabbed it too.
Sharing his achievements, Kunjan says that in 1999, his first poetry collection came out, for which he was awarded in 2000. Kunjan is also the recipient of the Maharana Mewar Awards for creative writing, which he received at the young age of eighteen.
Kunjan wishes to help the youth become successful journalists by imparting his literary knowledge to them, coupled with humanity and empathy, to represent facts well and raise a voice when required. Realising the need for eleventh and twelfth grade students to understand basic journalism, he wrote a book called ‘Samvad Setu’ that is being taught across schools.
Kunjan has also been associated with the media for assembly elections and has also served as a Consultant with ABP News and Aaj Tak. He has worked with regional channels like Zed and First India, anchoring live discussions. He has also written a beautiful poem on Lord Krishna.
