An ENT surgeon specializing in head and neck cancers, Kanishk has pursued a successful career in medicine. Kanishk advises aspiring doctors to stay focused, keep moving forward with determination, and seek guidance from those already established in the field.

Dr. Kanishk Mehta is an ENT surgeon specializing in head and neck cancers at GBH American Hospital in Udaipur. He has been associated with GBH American Hospital for the past five years.

Kanishk says that after completing his master's degree in ENT from Ahmedabad, he pursued a super-specialization in head and neck cancers.

Talking about his journey, Kanishk shares that when he was getting into this profession and finishing his degree, there was no one in his close contacts to guide him. He says that it was up to him to figure out how to navigate through the profession. His main concern was to make connections in the domain to be able to set up a successful practice or hospital. It also included learning how to manage patients and the processes of a hospital.

Kanishk also highlights that there is competition in every field these days, and the medical profession is no different. He started working as a subordinate doctor in Ahmedabad under a senior doctor in the city. During this period, he was able to learn in depth about the profession.

Before joining the hospital in Udaipur, Kanishk worked in Ahmedabad, but he felt uncertain about starting his own practice due to the challenging market conditions. However, he received an opportunity to join GBH American Hospital, which he found appealing in terms of the city, the hospital, and the compensation package.

One of the challenges Kanishk faces at GBH American Hospital is being the sole consultant at the hospital, where he has to make critical decisions and communicate with the families of patients, which can be difficult.

During his post-graduation, Kanishk found guidance and inspiration from his HOD (Head of Department), Dr. Girish Mishra, who taught him to be a jack of all trades and taught him the importance of remaining calm. He also draws inspiration from his lawyer friend, who has instilled in him the value of doing things for our own satisfaction.

For aspiring doctors, Kanishk advises seeking guidance from someone already in the field, and the medical profession requires a long and dedicated journey. He also advises aspiring doctors to be a part of some associations, such as the Indian Medical Association.

Kanishk says that, as a doctor, he himself is a member of many groups and associations, such as the Indian Medical Association, the Association of Otolaryngologists, and several local-level associations. These associations not only help him connect with people in the same profession but also provide guidance both morally and legally.

Apart from professional alignments, Kanishk is also part of Jain groups like the Dayanand Forum. A lot of his family members are also politically active, and he participates with some of them from time to time.

If Kanishk could go back in time via a time machine, he would like to associate himself with a senior doctor from the beginning to receive proper guidance.

Kanishk says that his childhood was spent in various cities, including Jodhpur, Gujarat, and Delhi, as his father worked as an engineer, and due to frequent relocations, he experienced a diverse upbringing.

Drawing a comparison between education and experience, Kanishk believes that education is paramount and cannot be replaced. While experience, on the other hand, complements education and provides valuable insights into practical decision-making. “Education is the foundation, while experience adds valuable perspective”, says Kanishk.

Outside of his medical profession, Kanishk shares that he is a self-proclaimed food lover and enjoys exploring different places for culinary experiences. He also finds pleasure in playing badminton to stay physically active.

Kanishk advises aspirants to stay focused and not worry much about marks but rather keep moving forward with determination.
