Dishant Yagnik is a cricketer who has played for five years for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Currently, he is the fielding coach for the Rajasthan Royals team.
Dishant was born in Banswara, a small town in Rajasthan. Cricket was in his family, as his father and grandfather used to play the game. There was even a tournament organized in the name of his great-grandfather. Watching all this, he also got inspired to play cricket and dreamt about being a cricketer. Initially, he learnt the tricks of cricket in an academy in Banswara and then in Udaipur.
Dishant says that struggle is always a part of life in any field. He remembers living in Jaipur for three years to learn cricket. At that time, for several days, he had to even skip meals in order to focus more and more on practice. He practiced for eight hours per day. He says that all players have to struggle. Gradually his game improved and his coach asked him to do wicket-keeping which gave him good success.
Dishant thinks that you cannot practice under restricted limits just as you cannot prepare for the IAS with one book only. You must practice hard and for long hours.
For the youngsters desiring to enter the field of cricket, his advice is to enter only if you have a big passion for the game. Don’t do it just because someone is saying so. He says that there is a fire inside every man. And achievements are like fuel to the fire. You shall also have a lot of patience as success does not come easily.
Dishant thinks signing up for the Rajasthan Royals was a big decision for him. He had proposals from three franchises: the Mumbai Indians, the Deccan Chargers, and the Rajasthan Royals. He consulted his father who advised him to join the RR as he would feel like family there.
Dishant’s father always guided him in tough times. Once he was out for zero in five out of six innings of a tournament. He was so depressed that he thought of quitting cricket. But, his father guided him not to lose heart and keep trying. And in the same tournament, he went on to score two big scores, overcoming his initial failure.
Dishant considers Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara as his role models. He was also influenced by Adam Gilchrist and always wanted to become like him.
Dishant feels that everyone should go through a bad patch at some point in their lives. That experience teaches us many things.
If Dishant is taken back in time through a time machine, he would like to have a better coach when he was under-17 and practice more cricket.
Dishant thinks that every youngster dreams of becoming Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, or Bumrah. But they do not want to go through the grind that they have gone through. He says that without pain, there is no gain.
