Devi Sharma is a Director and Cinematographer.
Devi is originally from Bhatinda, Punjab and currently resides in Chandigarh.
Talking about his work, Devi says that he has been in this field for about 25 years. He says that he had been interested in movies since childhood. He went to Delhi to learn filmmaking. He worked there for about five years as an assistant director and cinematographer. His passion for filmmaking made him work hard as well. He kept learning under established filmmakers for a better part of his first fifteen years in the industry.
Finally, he started directing and shooting his own programs, films, and theatre dramas in the Punjabi film industry. He believes that a Director of a film is the equivalent to a ship's captain who has to take all the available resources with them and take it to a destination.
Devi says that as a Director, you can’t learn unless you are patient, as you will have to deal with all kinds of people in this profession. He adds that you need to be resilient too as many challenges will present themselves while making a film but you need to keep going.
Devi says that he likes to watch and learn from Prakash Jha, as he manages a huge crew efficiently. Thus, he considers Prakash Jha as his role model.
Devi considers his movie Dulla Vaily as his biggest achievement and has got massive appreciation for it.
In his free time, Devi likes to watch Hollywood films, read books, and go on walks. He also likes spending time with his close ones who give him positive energy.
Advising budding filmmakers, Devi says that first, you should complete your education. Then, he says, you should watch more and more films and observe them minutely. He further says that if you are financially well-off, you can pursue professional courses in filmmaking, and if you’re not, you should assist established filmmakers and learn this way. Lastly, he says, take your parents' blessings and go at your goal with a clear vision.
