Devendra has been an advocate and a practicing lawyer for twenty-nine years in consumer protection law. He is also an animal and bird lover and a social welfare worker.

Devendra Mohan Mathur has been practicing in the Consumer Court since the time the Consumer Protection Act was passed and introduced. His objective in coming before this court was to inform the consumer about the infringement of their rights.

Devendra was born in Jaipur. Since his childhood, he has had leadership qualities in him, as he always wanted to make people aware and informed.

Leaving behind his practice in the High Court, he shifted his career towards consumer protection law for the desire to explore an unknown and untouched area, knowing that this field was distinctive. After a lot of research and hard work, he was able to get many rules incorporated into the very act regarding rights about taxes, road tax, etc.

Devendra thinks that struggle is a crucial part of the journey of any lawyer. When you help someone win a case, it gives you satisfaction.

Devendra advises the new students to gain full knowledge of their respective fields by means of research and experiments, which will cost time and hard work. Understanding the law, regular studies, social welfare, adaptability to socialism, and fellowship are required to pursue this career. Also, one must be an extrovert in order to establish good practice.

Devendra considers that if a lawyer is able to make a new law for the public at large, there is no achievement bigger than that, and he feels that he did it and got recognized for his work, which he could not get if he had worked in the High Court.

During the lockdown, he could not go to court, but he was in touch with his clients on the phone, got advice, and got paid. Also, he suggested that we should consider ourselves social scientists by engaging in everyday research and reading. He also did the same, upgraded his knowledge through studies, and worked on some old files. He focuses on making optimum use of time, as “time is money” for lawyers.

Other than that, Devendra is an animal and bird lover and works for their welfare by feeding them at different places with the help of his team, which dedicatedly works on Saturdays and worked very well during the lockdown.

Drawing a comparison between education and experience, Devendra is of the opinion that a certain degree is a must, but experience is necessarily to be gained afterwards; that can only be gained with complete dedication towards learning. He states, Everybody has a mind, and everybody can become Einstein. One who implements his ideas will only become Einstein, adds Devendra.

If Devendra were not an advocate, he would like to work for social welfare and increase his network of fellowships. He likes reading, lecturing in seminars, and spending time in research and development.

CA Sunil Goyal is his ideal in life and also his godfather, from whom he got inspired while seeing him argue in court. He also did income tax work with him.

His advice to advocates and lawyers is simple: hard work and passion are the cornerstones of success. Work is akin to worship in this field, with no shortcuts available. It's a long-term endeavor where dedicated effort is indispensable.
