Dr. Devendra Singh Chouhan is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Geography Department of Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur.
Hailing from Salumbar, Devendra completed his higher studies at MLSU, Udaipur. He has also cleared the NET and SET exams, along with an Advanced Diploma in Computers. From 2010 to 2016, he served as a lecturer at a school and then joined the university.
Devendra considers himself a born teacher. He enjoys acquiring information and then sharing it with people who want it; this brings him great joy. He feels that sharing our knowledge is the most significant thing we can do. After each lesson, he reflects on his joy and pleasure at having been able to share his hard-earned expertise.
Recalling his childhood, Devendra says he was raised in a remote area where most of the houses were built of mud and there were no shops. His father did farming and faced such a time when he didn’t have any footwear or proper clothes to wear. There was a huge scarcity of water. He used to walk around 1.5 kilometers twice a day in order to fetch water. He had to walk 3–4 kilometers to reach his school.
With the guidance of some of his relatives, he came to Udaipur for higher studies. He used to work as a courier boy to pay for his own expenses and not become a burden on his family. He even worked as a security guard. There were times when he didn’t have anything to eat for days. But later, in 2006, he joined a private college and then did his B.Ed. He has faced many challenges and obstacles throughout his journey.
For the people aspiring to join the teaching line, Devendra says one can achieve anything they want; all you need to have is determination and hard work. Even though he was told to opt for IAS/RAS, he was oriented towards the teaching line, so he did not stop at any point and made regular efforts, which led to his becoming a university professor.
He gives credit for his success to his parents and all his teachers. He believes in taking positivity from everyone and ignores the negative. He is grateful to his Ph.D. guides and supervisors, who guided him to reach where he is today.
If he ever gets a chance to go back in time, he would like to go back to his childhood days.
Right from his school days, Devendra was given multiple leadership tasks. He was the class monitor, president, and captain of his school cricket team, and he was even the speaker in the morning assembly at school. He got the leadership quality from his school, which he is continuing in his college by leading students and even the staff.
Devendra strongly believes that ‘work is worship’. One should always do his work with honesty. Your hard work will definitely pay off; if not today, then tomorrow, for sure. He gives an example that earlier he used to teach in a private college at a salary of Rs. 5,000, but at that time he didn’t take care of the pay, but rather was focused on delivering his best, and he got the result in the form of his successful clearance of competitive exams.
