A tattoo artist, Denzil really loves his profession. He thinks that he is living his dream life pursuing it.

Denzil Clement is the founder and director of Denzil Art Services Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai.

Denzil hails from Mumbai. He has been pursuing the art of tattooing for the past sixteen years.

Talking about his childhood, Denzil says that he was diagnosed with Dyslexia. He struggled to study and was not really good at his studies. However, art was something that always fascinated him and through which he could really express himself. He would draw paintings of everything: trees, plants, animals, etc. with charcoal pieces. Besides, he says he opted for the Arts stream in high school due to his interest in fine arts. Pursuing arts helped him soothe himself and also bring his aggression levels down.

Denzil shares that at college, he would design tattoos for his friends that they would get inked onto their skin. His friends would love his designs. Later, realizing how the tattoo industry was not functioning the way it should be, his friends advised him to become a tattoo artist. The first tattoo that he made was a massive hit in his college and thus his journey as a tattoo artist picked up.

Talking about his struggles, Denzil says that by the grace of the almighty he hasn’t faced many difficulties in life. However, he had to face some hardships when he moved out of the country after the terror attack in Mumbai. He was also working as a chef at that time as he was advised to take up a mainstream job alongside tattooing. He says it was very tough for him to source material for his tattoo art from people from other countries as in the west people wouldn’t consider untrained or amateur tattoo artists worthy enough. But later, he happened to meet a Latino tattoo artist in Miami who really helped him.

Denzil thinks that tattooing is something that chose him and not that he chose it. Talking about his achievements, he says that the TOI and a Gujarati daily wrote articles on him. Besides, many celebrities bought his art pieces.

Denzil debunks the myth by saying that contrary to what people think the profession of tattooing is not all about consuming drugs and alcohol, it’s a very safe profession that requires you to be very disciplined to pursue it.

If he could go back in time via a Time Machine, Denzil would want to avert the spelling mistake that he committed whilst designing a tattoo for one of his clients. It was the biggest blunder he has made, he says.

Denzil loves his profession so much that he doesn’t feel that he is working. However, in his spare time, he can be found playing the guitar, traveling, or drawing caricatures.

Denzil thinks that everyone should do what really interests them and find time for themself.

“ You are what you think.” is Denzil’s favorite quote that has really changed the way he leads his life, he says.

Denzil’s piece of advice for people is to find something that they can do even for free and everything else will automatically fall into place.
