Deepak Dixit is the conceptualizer and Director of the famous and highly popular ‘Dharohar Folk Dance Show’ in Udaipur.
Deepak hails from Udaipur and completed his schooling at the Arya Samaj School. He completed his graduation in Science from MB College, Udaipur. He learned a lot about acting from his siblings, as they were also connected with the art field. He used to play different roles in his childhood with his siblings and cousins.
Deepak shares that he had been interested in the art field since childhood and started dancing and acting in plays in school. When he was in college, he started participating in youth festivals and doing theatre plays. He joined the Disha Natya Sanstha, and then eventually met a famous artist, Bhanu Bharti, in Udaipur. He offered his services as a manager for their theatre group. He did many performances at different places and also learned the ‘Gavri’ dance form. Then he got an opportunity to join the West Zone Cultural Centre in Udaipur.
Slowly and gradually, his interest developed in this field, and he got an opportunity to go to Mumbai. There he got his first Bollywood feature film, ‘Love 86’, in which he played double roles, and his interest in movies was enhanced from there. He spent five years in Mumbai and worked in many films and serials like Panah, Bedardi, Khiladi, Zid, etc. In 2018, he played a role in the serial ‘Kya Haal Mister Panchaal.’ He came back to Udaipur in the year 2000 and started a folk dance show named ‘Dharohar’ for tourists. Now, it has become world-famous as it consists of various folk arts and also puppet shows.
At the time of the lockdown, he and his wife started a show called ‘Lok Dharohar’ with the objective of ‘By the artist, to the artist, and for the artist.’ They started this show to support folk artists during the troubled time of the pandemic. Currently, about 50 artists are connected with this show and provide their services to promote folk arts.
When asked about his role models, Deepak says his father is his role model, as he fulfilled all his demands when he was a child. He also admires the acting of Amitabh Bachan and tries to follow him.
Talking about his struggles, Deepak says that he dropped his second-year examination and went to Mumbai for the shoot of a movie. His parents were against this decision, but his siblings supported him a lot. He faced many challenges in Mumbai, as he had to visit many assistant directors to get a role. But he never gave up and strived continuously to fulfil his dreams. He also faced challenges initially when he started Dharohar. The biggest challenge that he faced was to bring artists from rural areas and train them. He faced some financial issues but made his best efforts to achieve success.
Sharing his achievements, Deepak says that he has been recognised by ‘Tripadvisor’ multiple times for Dharohar. He also received awards from Lok Jan Sansthan for his work. However, he says the appreciation that his group receives from the people is his biggest accomplishment.
The quote by Shakespeare ‘ The Show Must Go On’ and the song ‘Yeh kaisi hai Zindagani’ motivate and inspire him a lot.
Advising upcoming aspirants to his field, Deepak says that passion and zeal are important to enter the field of acting. One should first take training to learn proper acting techniques and prepare themselves. He believes that if you work honestly and if your luck supports you, you will surely get success.
If given a time machine to go back in time, Deepak would want to be a kid again.
Deepak advises following the path of patience, courage, hard work, truth, and non-violence. In his opinion, the youth must have patriotism in their hearts and should work with honesty to grow our country.
