Deeksha Sharma holds the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Cornell University, New York. She has also recently founded Enzo Life, a meditation workshop that offers therapy through art and music.
Hailing from Haridwar, Deeksha is an alumna of IIT Roorkee, where she completed her PhD in Emotional Intelligence.
Deeksha's journey began with a natural inclination towards engineering, influenced by her engineer parents. After pursuing engineering and an MBA, she worked as a coder at HCL. However, she discovered a desire for something more and redirected her focus to Emotional Intelligence. After that, she completed her PhD, applied to several foreign universities to get international exposure and got accepted into Cornell University. Presently, she is engaged in research on an adaptive intelligence tool.
The exposure gained through her experiences at TEDx sessions has allowed Deeksha to address audiences on mental health and wellbeing in the USA, India, and Taiwan. She firmly believes that emotions constitute a universal language.
Notably, she has recently founded Enzo Life, a meditation workshop that offers therapy through art and music. Additionally, she has been invited by IISC Bangalore to conduct a workshop for students. She feels that today’s youngsters are going through a lot of stress, and it becomes necessary for them to pay attention to their mental health.
Recalling her childhood memories, Deeksha attributes her values to her loving yet disciplinarian parents. They instilled in her a deep respect for everyone, including household helpers, and encouraged her to pursue her aspirations. She shares that her mother is also an alumna of IIT Roorkee and was the only girl in her entire batch doing engineering. Her father was a mathematics topper and also studied at IIT Roorkee. Both of her parents built everything with their hard work, which she appreciates the most. She reminisces about watching Doordarshan on Sundays with her parents, highlighting the simplicity of her childhood.
Deeksha shares that while she was teaching at IIT Roorkee, she had many experiences that she cherishes the most. She describes IIT Roorkee as a mini-India because students here come from diverse cultures and regions, and one common thing between them is their intelligence. She recounts an inspiring experience with a student from an economically challenged background who had never used any electronic gadgets, not even a phone or laptop, and now has achieved remarkable success through his hard work and humility. She feels proud to have mentored him and admires his willingness to learn despite challenging circumstances.
Addressing life's challenges, she emphasizes the inevitability of obstacles and the need to confront failures for success. She advocates prioritizing mental health, sharing about her friend's battle with cancer as a lesson in appreciating good health. She learned that if we are healthy and not suffering from any disease, then we should take it as a blessing and feel good about it.
She urges individuals facing mental health issues to seek support from loved ones. She believes in celebrating every moment of happiness, no matter how small it is, and emphasizes paying attention to your mental health.
When asked about her role models, Deeksha says that she is inspired by all those women who have fought for women's rights and achieved something great in their lives. She mentions Mother Teresa as a role model. She is also inspired by her maternal grandmother, who saved the life of a woman at the time of partition without thinking much and also helped the refugees. Besides, she has learned a lot from her paternal grandmother, who was a businesswoman who fought bravely in her tough time. She believes that every woman has her own struggles, which makes them stronger.
Underscoring the significance of basic education, she stresses that it forms the foundation for developing physiological skills in students. She believes education takes precedence over experience, asserting that acquiring skills post-education is crucial for future opportunities.
Deeksha’s life mantra is to never give up no matter how hard the situation gets, and to be kind to people. She advises the youngsters to stay away from any kind of addiction and make themselves mentally strong.
