Debasish Talukdar is a Classical Artist and Musician.
Originally hailing from Assam, he relocated to Lucknow in 2015 in search of better opportunities within the realm of music.
Reflecting upon his childhood years, Debasish shares that his upbringing was steeped in spirituality, with his father serving as the President of the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temple. His early exposure to a devout environment ignited his fascination with mythology, leading him to memorize all verses of the Bhagavad Gita by the age of five.
Under the tutelage of his father, he delved into scriptural studies in a gurukul, adhering to a disciplined routine encompassing early morning prayers at four in the morning and a fasting regimen until nine in the morning and after sunset. Despite facing adversity due to his father's untimely demise, he persisted through the challenges and completed his schooling.
Encouraged by his Tabla tutor, and influenced by his father's desire for him to learn classical art, he began his formal training under Ustad Zulfikar Hussain, obtaining his B.Music in 2009. Subsequently, he extended his musical pursuits to classical vocal training under the guidance of guru Anita Shrivastava, completing his B.Music in Classical Vocal by 2012 while concurrently studying in 12th standard. Subsequently, he enrolled in a college to pursue an honors degree in Political Science.
Debasish recounts a pivotal moment when he performed in his college's Freshers’ Day programme, where he garnered appreciation from his friends. This incident served as a catalyst for him to embark on a formal journey in music, seeking proper training beyond the informal exposure he had received from his father.
Thereafter, he dropped out of his graduation in political science and chose to further his education at the Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow. Despite financial constraints, he arrived in Lucknow with no resources. He was facing challenges with language too, as he didn't know how to read and speak Hindi.
He somehow reached the university and met a professor, who advised him to go back to his hometown, but he was determined about receiving formal training. Unyielding in his pursuit, he sought guidance from Ustad Ilmas Hussain Khan, who generously offered to teach him without charging any fees. However, his struggle persisted as he grappled with homelessness and the scarcity of food for the next six months.
Sharing about his role models, Debasish acknowledges his father as a profound inspiration and credits Ustad Zulfikar Hussain as both a guide and a father figure since his father's demise. Upon his arrival in Lucknow, the Lyrics Academy of Music and his colleague, Anshika Kataria, played pivotal roles in supporting his musical journey.
Debasish draws inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita shloka, "Karmanye Vadhikaraste ma phaleshu Kadachana" (meaning one should perform actions without expecting any results).
Highlighting his achievements, Debasish claims to be the youngest individual to contribute to, write, and publish books spanning various classical art forms, including vocal, instrumental, and dance. His published works include 'Kathak' and 'Tabla-A Quest,' with another book upcoming on classical vocal and instrumental. He aspires to author more such books. He considers himself fortunate to have pursued a career in music.
To aspiring students of classical art, Debasish advises them to wholeheartedly focus on their craft, emphasizing the necessity of extensive practice and hard work. He recommends dedicating a minimum of eight hours daily to one's chosen field.
In light of the accelerating pace of modernity, he advocates the preservation of classical arts, urging everyone to cherish and safeguard these timeless traditions.
