Dav Singh is the founder of Dav Tattoo Studio in Delhi.
Talking about his childhood, Dav says that his childhood was filled with a lot of hardships. He hailed from a family with low means of survival. He did not have anyone to support him. He would work alongside his studies to support himself. He did many odd jobs. Later, he started working as a painter with his brother. And learning to paint also helped him distinguish himself from other students at school as would always bring laurels to his school in painting competitions. After completing his school, he did an ITI diploma.
Dav shares that in 2009, one of his friends suggested that he try his hand at tattooing. At that time, he didn’t think highly of tattooing as a profession. However, since he already knew how to paint, it was not that tough for him to pick up tattooing. He started learning to tattoo from a tattoo artist and later started learning it independently. He would draw tattoos on fruits, leaves, etc. to hone his tattoo art.
Dav believes that contrary to what people think, tattooing is a good profession and can facilitate a good life if you pursue it dedicatedly.
Talking about his achievements, Dav says that rising from small and being able to create his own identity in Delhi as a tattoo artist is his biggest achievement.
To aspiring tattoo artists, Dav advises them to first improve their drawing and sketching skills as it will help them be more creative with their tattoo art. Besides, he advises parents that tattooing is an art and a dignified profession and they should let their children make their career in it if they want to.
In his spare time, Dav likes to make portraits and sketches. Besides, he also likes to make videos of his tattoo work to post them on social media.
Talking about COVID, Dav says that the pandemic affected the profession of tattooing badly as all tattoo studios were shut and it was not something that could be done from home. Besides, he says, even when things started to normalize people didn’t prefer to have tattoos inked onto their skin as they feared catching the virus which was quite challenging initially.
Dav’s Life Mantra is to keep working as practice makes a man perfect. He says that there’s no shortcut to success, you have to face struggles and failures to taste success later.
To tattoo artists, Dav advises them to take care of hygiene to not spread any disease from one person to another whilst doing tattoos.
