Regular ‘Riyaaz’ is the key to success in classical music.
Danish Hilal Khan is a highly accomplished vocalist who has the privilege of belonging to the prestigious Old Dilli Gharana, one of the oldest and most distinguished musical traditions in India. With a vocal expression that has been described as both solid and graceful, Danish is renowned for his versatility and ability to effortlessly traverse a wide range of musical styles, from semi-classical to Sufi. His powerful yet delicate renditions are a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft. He has been active in the field of music for the past twenty years.
Danish comes from a musical family, and all his brothers are talented singers and musicians. His desire to pursue a career in music was sparked by watching his older brothers practice classical music. He began by learning to play various musical instruments, but he was always drawn to Sufi singing. He was a big fan of Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He learnt classical singing for seven years before switching to his favorite genre, Sufi singing.
Danish's music training began under the guidance of his father, who was a prominent figure in the Indian music scene. His talent for singing was quickly recognized, and he was taken under the wing of his cousin, Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, who taught him all forms of Indian classical as well as semi-classical music. With this solid foundation in music, Danish has been able to develop his skills and become a talented musician in his own right.
Remembering his childhood memories, Danish reminisces about his childhood and fondly recalls that his elder brother introduced him to the world of music. Danish vividly remembers his brother teaching him the ‘SARGAM’ as his first lesson in music- a tradition that is followed by most music families. During those years, Danish's friends were also in the music field, and he used to spend his days performing and enjoying their talent. It seemed as though the surrounding environment was always filled with music!
Describing his journey, Danish recalls it with fondness and a sense of accomplishment. He has traveled a long way to reach this point. He remembers the struggles he faced as a young musician, when he was only sixteen years old and was told to wait and practice more, and felt ignored by those around him. People used to ignore his enthusiasm and preparation for years. But then he worked hard, and in just a short period of time, people started recognizing his talent.
Speaking of mistakes, Danish claims that classical musicians constantly compete by singing the SARGAM quickly. He was one of them too, but unlike classical singing, Bollywood singing requires the singer to sing more emotionally. His singing was then enhanced by adding feelings after realizing his error.
Speaking about his achievements, Danish says he started his journey as a singer with a Hindi serial telecasted on Doordarshan, which was a singing reality show, and he stood as the first runner-up in that competition. He also shares his experience with the famous singing reality show, ’Indian Idol’ where he was initially told that he had not qualified for the next round and had scored only the stand-by position. He was very upset with this result, but the next day only the famous music duo Salmaan-Sulemann gave him a surprise visit at his home with a wild card entry ticket. He was selected among the top twenty-five contestants. There are many more incidents and memorable achievements that he treasures from the reality shows.
When asked about his role models, Danish says he was inspired by Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his father, who was his first guru. He also credits his success to his guru, Ustaad Iqbal Khan.
To the young generation, Danish advises them to always do ‘Riyaaz’ and be humble to be great singers. He says that ‘Riyaaz’ is the key to success.
