Christopher Roberts is the Founder and Managing Director of Engaged Strategy and the creator of the Total Engagement Model. He helps unleash the potential of a brand, making it the first choice for people. In his company, they create an amazing internal culture so employees grow and deliver great customer experiences to foster loyalty and recommendations.
To work as a marketing manager, Christopher needed field experience, so he worked as a salesman for a few years. This helped him develop effective marketing strategies.
He also worked for large corporate companies and managed multi-billion-dollar portfolios, overseeing pricing, promotion, and other tasks. He shares that, in his youth, he was passionate about achieving record results by using strong customer insights from market research and by engaging staff. While working, he noticed a gap in the marketing field. He realized that, while Marketing Research companies conducted thorough research, they often failed to provide concrete recommendations.
Christopher decided to open his own consultancy to fill this gap and help corporations increase their brand potential through insight-driven brand intervention. He uses organizational change processes to enhance brand recognition.
He explains that his consultancy focuses on making brands the best they can be. His definition of a brand goes beyond design elements and logos. It includes communication, advertising, product delivery, customer experience, and internal staff engagement. Their model involves strategic development through customer, brand, and employee strategies via workshops. They provide insights like customer experience, employee engagement, and brand services, followed by recommendations and implementation discipline, generating revenue from both market research and consulting.
He shares that his consultancy unleashes the potential in brands, making them the first choice for people. They create an amazing internal culture so employees grow and deliver great customer experiences to foster loyalty and recommendations. He believes there will always be a place for consulting firms like his in the industry.
Christopher explains that their marketing research and strategic insights lead to concrete results. He emphasizes that viewing staff as valuable assets and engaging them fully increases sales. A good internal culture with engaged, productive employees naturally boosts customer satisfaction and sales, turning customers into brand promoters.
Christopher says he faced various challenges in his consulting business. He wanted to help small businesses, but they couldn’t afford his fees. Additionally, he had to personally visit each client to give advice, which was time-consuming. This limited his ability to handle more than one project at a time, resulting in inconsistent revenue. The global financial crisis was the biggest challenge in his career, significantly slowing his business growth.
Despite these challenges, he engaged in a lot of public speaking and was invited to give a presentation for the Australian Marketing Institute. This generated immediate leads, resulting in sales and new clients. After the financial crisis, he started gaining more clients through word-of-mouth referrals from existing clients, as advised by his accountant. Gradually, he began rebuilding his client base.
Sharing his achievements, Christopher highlights one of his best accomplishments: increasing home loan sales from an average of 55 million per month to 125 million per month while working on a troubled portfolio where three companies were merging. Thanks to his and his team's efforts, every employee of the three companies retained their jobs post merger. He enjoys tackling challenging projects and delivering outstanding results.
Christopher was born in Mumbai, and completed his education there. He graduated with a degree in Physics and obtained a postgraduate diploma in Business Management. Later, he moved to Australia and worked in various fields, such as Telecommunications, Energy, and Banking. He mainly worked in the service industry, particularly in sales and marketing roles.
Recalling his days in Mumbai, Christopher says he didn't know exactly what career he wanted. However, he was sure he didn't want to pursue engineering or commerce and wanted to do something creative in business. He decided to delve into marketing after hearing a lecture about it while pursuing his post-graduation in Business Management. He believes marketing combines creativity, analysis, and strategy.
He shares a story about going to a fish market with his grandmother when he was 10 years old. There, he learned about marketing, which made him more interested in the field, and he feels that this incident might have remained in his subconscious mind.
Christopher’s success mantra is "There is always a way if you look hard enough." This mindset helped him build strategies for troubled portfolios that were not performing well.
At a meeting in Sydney, he was inspired by Bryce Courtenay, author of The Power of One, who said, “If you're skating on thin ice, you might as well tap dance.” This drove him to achieve record results for a troubled portfolio involving the merger of three companies.
Christopher has also written a book on employee engagement titled ‘Ten Reasons Why CX NPS Programs Fail’.
He shares that he was doing very well in his last corporate job but had a burning desire to start his own company. Despite the company and staff being good to him, he felt sick of the routine and craved more freedom and fulfillment. He believes he didn't sacrifice but rather worked hard to establish his firm. Now, he truly enjoys his work and has the freedom to do what he wants. He has fulfilled his desire and is living the life he always wanted.
Christopher believes that some people are born leaders, and he considers himself one of them. He says that when he was young, he believed in competing with himself rather than with others. He also believes anyone can develop leadership qualities. According to him, the major qualities of a good leader are vision, a strong sense of empathy, influencing skills, and kindness. He is inspired by John Quincy Adams, the 6th U.S. President, who said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”
He says that as his organization grew, he attracted people who were not a good fit for the organizational culture. He had to make the tough decision to let some of them go, which was a difficult decision for him.
When asked about his role models, Christopher says he is motivated by people who make a difference beyond business, such as Oprah Winfrey and Tony Robbins. He is also inspired by Eckhart Tolle. In his youth, he admired Al Ries and Jack Trout, authors of the book ‘Positioning’.
Christopher says if he could go back in time in a time machine, he would focus more on kindness than on what is right or wrong in his personal and business relationships. However, he feels that everything happened for the best, and he wouldn't change anything.
Christopher advises young people that education provides a foundation, but experience refines abilities and leads to wisdom. He believes that to achieve success, one must be creative, analytical, and outcome-focused. He compares marketing to a chess game with four strategic points: customers, competitors, market, and employees. Running a business requires consistency, which helps in navigating tough times and enjoying the good ones. He believes you must link your business to your personal purpose.
In his free time, Christopher enjoys spending time with his family, watching movies, and reading books. He also likes playing cricket, table tennis, and tennis.
During the pandemic, he faced financial impacts but continued to conduct activities for young singles to keep them engaged and uplifted. This initiative helped his staff understand how much they are cared for.
