Chhavi Singh Rao is an extremely talented judo player with over seven years of experience.
Chhavi, in 2019, got ranked 7th in the All India Inter-University Judo Championships and the Khelo India Inter-University Championship. Prior to joining Judo, she was a softball player and the captain of the state-level team. But due to some circumstances, her softball coach left the school, and she also eventually distanced herself from the game. She later chose a solo game of Judo on the advice of her parents.
Chhavi says Judo requires strength, speed, agility, and endurance, but a sportsperson can never succeed without discipline. She says that in judo, physical skills play an integral role, as does having gratitude towards seniors and fellow opponents. She feels that in order to succeed as a Judo player, a person has to always be ready to accept opportunities in life and be consistent.
Chhavi diligently follows the fact that practice makes a man perfect and hence suggests that whatever it costs, a sportsperson should always give their time to their game and always abide by the schedule and advice from the coach and seniors. She says that behind all her success is her coach and the schedule designed by him, which she strictly follows.
Throughout her career, Chhavi has won eleven state medals—four gold, three silver, and the rest bronze. At the national level, she won four medals—one gold, one silver, and the rest bronze. Like every sportsperson, she aspires to represent India in the coming future.
Chhavi feels that nobody is born a leader, but with experience, a person imbibes the skills to be a great leader. She says that she developed her leadership skills by imitating her coach and was also immensely inspired by Subhash Chandra Bose.
In her free time, Chhavi likes to read books, play musical instruments like the piano and tabla, and hang out with her friends.
If given a chance to travel back in time in a time machine, Chhavi would definitely like to relive her school days, try to give more effort and time to her sport instead of education, and also begin Judo early.
Chhavi laments that when COVID hit, it affected the 2020 Olympics. This was clearly a setback for the players. As it was for everyone, the pandemic was an extremely tough time to bear. Her schedule got hindered, and she also had to take online classes in order to not slack in her studies.
Chhavi’s role models are her parents, due to their efforts and support, and then her coach, Dr. Himanshu Rajora, who made her a better sportsperson, and last but not least, M.C. Mary Kom, who proved herself despite starting late.
