It may be tough, but if it is worth dying for, just go for it.
It may be tough, but if it is worth dying for, just go for it.
Bindu Anirudhan is a passionate singer and the founder of ‘Vith Art Room’ (@vithartroom). Now she is working in the mainstream film industry and has given her voice to a few films as well. She is also working on her own songs and creating her own compositions.
Singing since the age of 3, Bindu started learning it formally at 17, when she joined a music college to pursue her interest in singing and songwriting. She was very passionate about music from the very beginning, although she never thought she would be able to make a career in it. She wanted to learn music in school itself but did not have the training required. But when she joined the college, she realised that she had found her true self there.
Currently, she is also working on her own songs and creating her own compositions. However, the COVID-19 pandemic situation has reduced opportunities, and the work she used to get has also been reduced.
Born and brought up in Gujarat, she did her schooling in Gujarat itself and now she is settled in Kochi, Kerala where she is pursuing a career in the music field. When she was pursuing her BA degree in fine arts, Anirudhan and her college mate Manu Mohan (formally pursuing art since the age of 25) always used to ponder what could be done in the field of art and music. This is when they came up with the idea of ‘Vith Art Room’ (@vithartroom). ‘Vith’ is a Malayalam word that means 'seed.’ They both collectively knew what it felt like to start new things. Under this initiative, they conduct workshops and art discussions focused primarily on nature and the environment and let the kids explore their inner art. They don’t follow any conventional teaching methods and are not teachers but guides, which is what Bindu emphasises.
At the Vith Art Room, they guide the students to create their own ideas instead of putting ideas in their brains. Thus, they inspire the students to create their own works of art. They started this initiative two years ago, but as soon as it started getting momentum, they were impacted by the pandemic.
She believes that she herself is her own role model and has taken some important lessons from life as it came to her. Initially, Bindu thought that the path of an artist was very easy and full of fame and recognition, although reality has opened her eyes now. She has met a lot of good people on her way and has learned some important lessons from the negative people as well. Her friends, family, strangers, and the people she has come across have been an inspiration to her in some way or another.
Bindu says that for a long time, she thought that success meant being rich and famous and travelling around the world. However, she is now of the view that success is just getting up every day and doing what you feel like doing i.e. her passion. To her, success means taking charge of her life. Advising the newcomers in this field, artist Anirudhan shares that it is not a smooth journey, but if they wish to make a career as artists and if they think this field is worth dying for them, then they should definitely choose this field.
The quote ‘Don't look down at anybody and don't look up at anybody’ has struck her to the core. When she was on a reality show, she auditioned for a movie. She was very naive back then. She used to worship the people she was working with, but then her experiences taught her not to look up to anybody. She believes in respecting people, but at the same time, she is aware that nobody will do things for her. On the other hand, she also believes that people who hold good positions today must not look down on others but should respect them instead.
Bindu feels that the biggest mistake in her life was giving control of her life to many people around her. It just made her lose her way and confused her a lot. She says that one should take full control of one’s life. She underlines that it is very important to make mistakes so that we can learn from them on our way ahead.
Talking about her struggles, Bindu shares that most of her challenges consisted of her work in the film industry. She never had a godfather to be noticed. But as she was in a reality show, she got the chance to audition and thus take a ticket to the film industry. Another major struggle in this field was making a living out of it. After working for the past 3 years, she is still treated as a beginner at times. Even if she grows into an influential person, she would like to change this scenario one day. The quote, “You could get exposure if you sing, but exposure doesn’t pay bills,” rightly fits into her situation.
She believes that the field of music has a lot of scope, but people have to start breaking the stereotype. With so many independent artists coming up, she believes that in 10 years, the future of music will change drastically. Advising the young musicians, Bindu shares that they need to keep working hard, and in 10 years they will be able to make a mark in the industry.
Bindu is surrounded by music all day. When she is not working, she writes new songs and keeps searching for new artists and albums. In her free time, she likes to catch up with her friends and take care of her plants. She is also very particular about cleanliness and loves to clean around the house due to her obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also tries to focus on her mental well-being and is not afraid to seek help on bad days.
Lastly, Bindu shares that anyone can approach her through her Instagram profile, 'binduanirudhan_', to share anything or connect with her.
