Biki pursued art wholeheartedly and chose freelancing to polish his practical skills.

Biki Das is a Freelance Artist.

Biki was born and brought up in Guwahati, Assam and did his schooling there. Then he moved to Biswanath Chariali with his family, where his family currently resides. He then did his Masters in Fine Arts from Shantiniketan, West Bengal, and later settled there as a Freelance Artist.

Sharing his professional journey, Biki says that he began his freelancing journey eight years back. Biki studied at an Art School thus kick-starting his interest in the field. He recalls that his mother wanted him to pursue the art field but his father was against it, however his mother’s decision prevailed and he completed his art school. During his schooling, his teachers offered him an opportunity to teach younger students as a way of paying his fees. So he taught art for three years there. He was then advised by his teachers to pursue art professionally and get a professional degree in the field.

However, his poor financial background did not allow him to pursue further education so he began working at a college in Guwahati. He then appeared for the entrance exam of Santiniketan, the best art school in the vicinity, and got through after getting rejected in the first attempt. However, moving to another city posed a financial challenge for him as his part-time job of teaching art was based in Guwahati itself. He managed his finances by doing petty jobs. After completing his bachelor’s at Santiniketan, he applied there for pursuing masters and completed his masters from there itself. After completing his masters, Biki got an offer to teach at a college in Guwahati but he rejected it as he was more into freelancing which demands practical knowledge.

When asked about his mistakes in life, Biki says that during his graduation at Santiniketan, he didn’t open up his mind while choosing a major and stuck to the painting department. He says that he was assigned the sculpture department, which was third in his preference list. He then got disheartened and began losing interest in the art field altogether. However, his seniors eventually encouraged him and then he went on to graduate as the best student of the sculpture department. He says that the whole episode gave him an important life lesson, which was to play with the cards with which you are dealt without complaining.

Biki says that work has been good lately. He sometimes displays his art work in exhibitions and earns good enough. He has also been awarded several times. He believes that awards, appreciation, and recognition mean more to an artist than money.

Biki considers his mother as his role model, who supported him to pursue arts. He says that she used to do stitching and embroidery which is a form of art, he thinks that it surely had a good effect on him. He says that his teachers, friends, seniors, everyone is a role model to him.

In his free time, Biki likes listening to instrumental music. He says that his art is his meditation and gives him mental peace.
