Bharat Sharma is President of the South Asian Karate Federation & Vice President of the Commonwealth Karate Federation.
He also serves as President of the Karate Association in Delhi and an Executive Member of the Asian Karate Federation. From 2013 to 2023, he was a member of the World Karate Federation's Technical Commission. He has trained more than 50,000 students during his career and produced several national and international champions for India.
Bharat reveals that he was an avid sportsman and good athlete till he was fifteen years old. In hockey, cricket, basketball, and athletics, he represented his school. Later, he was attracted towards Karate because of Bruce Lee and believes that Karate changed his entire life. In 1987, he began teaching karate. He later trained the National Security Guard's Black Cat Commandos, as well as a number of police and paramilitary groups. He is currently also in charge of the Karate programmes at Bharat Karate Academy and Shukokai Karate India. He provides training to thousands of students along with his team of qualified coaches.
Bharat proudly says that his son Pranay Sharma created history by winning the gold medal in the World Championship WKF Series. Additionally, he put a lot of effort into getting Karate included in the SGFI School Games, the Police Games, and the University Games, all of which benefited a lot of kids.
He believes that the beauty of Karate is that there are various opportunities in this field. One can start their career in the field of Karate as a player and then can become a coach, a blackbelt, technical official, referee, judge, president, secretary and more. Karate provides good employment and keeps you fit, strong, confident and healthy.
Karate, as far as Bharat is concerned, is the art of fighting with empty hands. This is the art of self-defence, where we utilise our bodies as weapons. Karate incorporates physical fitness, mental stability, and discipline. It's a comprehensive art form where the first instruction covers combat and self-defence. With 200 national members in the World Karate Federation, karate is the most popular sport in the nation, second only to cricket. In the Olympics, the Asian Games, the South Asian Games, and other continental sports, it is a medal sport.
Delhi is Bharat’s hometown, and he finished his schooling there. He was an academically gifted youngster who had a strong early interest in sports. He joined karate because he always had a winning and competitive spirit.
He recalls a childhood incident in which he was challenged by a classmate to demonstrate a kick on the wall. He accepted the challenge, but ended up slipping on the ground. That youngster began laughing at that point, and Bharat made the decision to take karate classes. He travelled 25 kilometres from his house to attend a karate class and was accepted. He challenged his classmate once more and prevailed in his first bout following a rigorous month of preparation and training.
When asked about his role models, Bharat responds that he has been a follower of Lord Hanuman since he was a little child and feels that there isn't anybody else in the world that is comparable to him. According to him, God bestows upon a person power, bravery, and strength if they show the same level of commitment to their friends, family, and Guru as Hanuman ji did to Shri Ram. In addition, he looks up to Bruce Lee and draws inspiration from him.
Speaking about his struggles, Bharat states that he had to face many difficulties throughout his life, which is why he has attained all the positions that he has now. He had several obstacles to overcome when he first started karate because it was not a popular sport at that time and no one in his family participated in sports. For his karate lessons, he used to drive 25 kilometres each way every day. He used to be the first to arrive at class and stay late, and he liked cleaning the classroom too. He claims that his path of perseverance and hard work never stopped, and he never flinched away from work.
Furthermore, he says that he also worked in the politics and insurance field and in whatever field he worked, he definitely reached the top at least once. He was the Western District President of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha and was a member of Pradesh Karyakarini. He has achieved success in his life and currently occupies a number of roles in the karate community.
The song that motivates him is ‘Hai preet jahan ki reet sada’ and he follows the quote “Zindagi zinda dili ka naam hai, Murda dil kya khak jiya karte hain.” He loves all patriotic songs.
Advising new aspirants to this field, Bharat advises them to never take shortcuts in life and says that it is important to do hard work with honesty and full passion. He says along with training, dedication, passion and commitment, the blessings of your parents and guru as well as wishes of your friends is also very important to be successful. Always be loyal to your family, coach and friends. He advises to keep your head in the sky but to always keep your legs on the ground.
