An Indian documentary filmmaker, art historian and photographer, Benoy is known for his work in documenting the art heritage of India. He feels that his journey of life has taught him a great deal about art, compassion and philosophy.

Benoy K Behl is a Documentary Filmmaker, Photographer and Art Historian from Delhi. He has been working in this field since 1976.

Benoy has made 18 trips throughout the world in pursuit of art heritage. He has been invited by many famous universities of the world to give lectures such as Harvard University, Oxford University, and British Art Museum, Victoria Albert Museum etc.

Recalling his childhood, Benoy says that he was born in Delhi in 1956. Her father  was a person of culture and art and a person with great love for all. It was his father who aroused his interest in literature, poetry and philosophy. He remembers when he was young there used to be big boxes of books in his house. He used to read the books kept in them. His father instilled values, ethics, and warmth of love in him since childhood.

Benoy shares his journey and says that he never did any internship, he just read a wonderful book - “Film and the Director / by Don Livingstone” which enlightened him about film making. With his knowledge gained by the same book, in 1976, he had made two documentaries, and thus began his journey.

After a few years, he took admission in Pune's Film and Television Institute to understand the technicalities of film making. But he did his initial films without any technical training in filmmaking.

Benoy claims to have developed a special technique of low-light photography which came to be known as ‘Photography in Darkness’. Impressed by his low light photography techniques, the Director of Kodak Company of India sent him an offer to photograph the Ajanta Caves, which he accepted as an important opportunity of value. That project gave him exposure to the art field which he considers to be a turning point in his life. He has made about 146 documentaries so far, exhibitions of his work have been held in 74 countries and he has also written many books.

The Ajanta Caves photography project got immense praise all over the country. Even the Director General of the Archaeological Department praised him by writing a personal letter and complimented him for his work with the words -”You have conquered the Darkness of the Ajanta Caves”.

When asked about his role models, Benoy says that he considers his father as his role model. He also considers his beloved Sujata Chatterjee as his inspiration, who has always inspired him to discover himself.

Benoy tells the youth that in his initial journey, he was also not adept in worldly relations, he just knew how to do his work with full hard work. And his dedication and hard work got him excellence in his work and also recognition. That's why the youth should also work wholeheartedly while caring for the people.
