Atika transitioned to writing fiction after beginning her career as a journalist. She is currently one of the most in-demand screenwriters and a renowned dialogue writer in the Hindi film industry thanks to her work on the critically acclaimed and commercially successful films "Chhapaak,"  “Margarita With A Straw," and "Waiting."

Atika Chohan is a screenwriter. She has been screenwriting for more than  twelve years.

Recalling her childhood memories, Atika says she was born in Delhi, and was brought up in the area of Old Delhi under multiple cultural influences and learnt multiple languages which later influenced her to become a writer

Talking about her professional journey, Atika says that she started her career as a journalist. But in her early days, she did not know that she could write fiction or a novel. Earlier, she was just engaged in earning money and supporting her life. She worked as a print and television journalist until 2008. After a few years of struggling with herself and in search of her career, she finally realized that she wanted to write fiction and would definitely give Mumbai a chance. She took the screenwriting exam at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and qualified.

Recalling her struggles, Atika says that when she chose screenwriting as a career in 2008, it was not easy for her. She had transitioned in her career from a journalist to a screenwriter and had no film experience to ask for the job. She says it was a classic journey—moving to Mumbai with just 5,000 rupees in her account and finally starting to work as a television writer, eventually moving onto films. Meanwhile, she got many projects, many of which were movies, but they could not be made. She says that her struggle lasted for 14 years, from 2008 to 2014, until one of her projects took the form of a movie like “Margarita with a Straw."

When asked about her mistakes, Atika says she wants to continue making them. She never suppressed her voice and was clear about what she wanted to write and do in terms of films. Though she lost a few opportunities because of this, she has no regrets.

Speaking about her achievements, Atika says that she attributes her achievements to her persistence, resilience, and dogged determination. She considers her film "Chhapaak" as her greatest achievement to date, and she is very proud of it. She also considers her film "Guilty" to be her most proud achievement.

In her free time, Atika likes reading or doing something. She likes to go for long walks, and along with that, she does yoga three times a week. She takes a break from social media to detox herself.

Atika’s favorite quote is “Not too tight, not too loose.”

Atika advises the younger writers that their road will not be easy. She says that if your path is not hard, then it is not the right path, and if something is coming very easily, then something is wrong.  She suggests that you take up writing as a practice; the more you write, the more your writing will improve. When a goal is achieved, make a more challenging and difficult project your next aim.
