Ashok Sharma is an artist. He paints miniature, contemporary, and realistic paintings.
Ashok hails from Udaipur. He did his master's in drawing at MLSU, Udaipur.
Ashok shares that he belongs to a family of artists, so he felt a natural inclination towards art. Since his father was also interested in music, he encouraged him to pursue his creative endeavors. Ashok also has an MA in tabla and teaches tabla. He has also worked as a music and drawing teacher. Since 2000, he has been engaged in miniature painting. He recalls how his father taught him to draw when he was only three years old. Ashok learned miniature and commercial painting from his father and elder brother.
Recalling his childhood, Ashok says that it was spent in a disciplined manner. He used to follow a daily schedule where he would wake up at five in the morning, do some physical exercise, and swim. Then he would go to school, help his father with his shop, and also attend his music classes. Opting for science in ninth grade, he directed his attention towards academics. However, grappling with the curriculum's demands, he transitioned to the arts during his eleventh-grade studies. He also started working part time at a young age by utilizing his artwork, like painting shutters, etc.
Ashok shares that he has learned tabla under the guidance of his guru, following the guru-shishya tradition. He also completed his MA at the Akhil Bharatiya Gandhi Mahavidyalaya. He also got recruited as a tabla teacher but left the job after a year. He wanted to pursue a PhD in drawing but had so many responsibilities that he could not do so.
Talking about his challenges, Ashok says that after completing his MA, he also worked as a school teacher as he had to look after his family. He suffered from financial crises but continued his hard work and fought every situation bravely.
Sharing about his achievements, Ashok says that he won many competitions during his school and college days. He was also conferred with national awards and has been a gold medalist.
For students who want to pursue art as their profession, Ashok advises that art is a subject that requires devotion, patience, and sacrifice. “One should learn under the guidance of a guru and practice their art regularly”, says Ashok.
When asked about his role models, Ashok says that his gurus, from whom he learned music, are inspirational to him. He learned to paint from his father and elder brother and credits them for his success.
During his free time, Ashok likes to travel and visit new places. He also likes to cook and spend time with his family.
If he could go back in time via a time machine, Ashok would want to be a tabla player and aim to promote music and art in society.
