Ashok is a miniature and handmade painting artist. He specialises in Occultist paintings. He runs his family business in the heart of the city and works with local artisans to provide a variety of goods at affordable prices.

Ashok Mehta runs a handicraft and miniature painting shop in the name of ‘Ashok Arts.’ He has been doing this work since 1975. He himself is an artist but because of his eyes becoming weak, he can no longer work. He used to make Occultist paintings which no one in the city makes.

Ashok deals in handmade paintings on silk and marble along with selling wooden and brass handicraft items. He also does textile work like embroidery and teaches painting too.

Ashok was born in Udaipur and completed all his studies from here itself. He did B.A. from Shramjeevi College, Udaipur. Because of his family business, he got into it. His father was also an artist and he grew up learning this art from his father.

During the Covid pandemic, his business was affected a lot. Because of the complete closure of tourism, the business of his miniature paintings was shut as only foreigners understood that work. Also, there was no attention from the government on this work because of which his business came to a complete halt and the earning stopped entirely. This pandemic has made all the artists sit at home and now they have no work at all.

Ashok says that an international guide book comes out in the name of ‘Lonely Planet’, which every international tourist considers as his travelling bible. In the book, the name and description of his shop has been given, which is the biggest achievement for him. Apart from this, he gets the most recommendations on social media websites such as Tripadvisor, Google and others because of which many people come looking for his shop and take goods from there because he sells articles at the most reasonable price. This is an achievement for him.

Ashok suggests that if you have a penchant for this God gifted art, then you should come to this field and learn this art. However,  you must have a great teacher and a passion to learn this art.

Ashok believes that the main reason for his success is that he works at a fixed price and keeps a variety of good quality articles.

In his spare time, Ashok enjoys reading old history books in addition to miniature painting books related to his art. He also does yoga sometimes and goes for a walk at Gangaur Ghat. he likes to go to the roof of his mansion and see the view of the entire city. Every Sunday he spends time with his family.
