Practicing dance since the age of three, Ashima followed her passion for dance and is currently pursuing a PhD in performing arts. She also runs her own dance institute and teaches her students.

Ashima Sharma is a classical dance artist and scholar at Ashima Dance and Arts Academy. She has been in this field for the past 25 years.

Ashima belongs to Dehradun.

Recalling her childhood, Ashima says that her mother wanted her to learn classical dance, so she put her in dance classes when she was only three. In her teenage years, she started developing more interest and maturity in classical dance. She used to engage in all the extracurricular activities, such as taking classes for piano, tabla, singing, horse riding, and swimming. She tried everything under the sun and then decided to pursue dance as her career.

Ashima shares that she did her schooling at a convent school. She took Psychology and History in her 12th standard. Thereafter, she did Sociology Honors from Sri Venkateswara College, New Delhi. Then, she did her Master's in Communication from Manipal University. She has also completed ‘Prabhakar’ in Kathak from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, which is equivalent to a graduation degree.

Meanwhile, she was also working with Zee TV as an Associate Producer. After two years of working, she left her job and decided to pursue dance as her career. She started performing and teaching informally. Later, she did a master's in Kathak. Then, she qualified for the NET JRF in Performing Arts and is currently pursuing her PhD.

Sharing about her challenges, Ashima says that she struggled a lot to build physical strength and stamina and did yoga and meditation for it. She suggests that every artist be open to learning and read a lot to grow, and advises them to maintain consistency in their dance practice.

Talking about her achievements, Ashima says that clearing NET JRF was a great accomplishment for her. She topped in her MA in Kathak. Seeing her students win competitions makes her proud.

When asked about her role models, Ashima says that Kumudini Lakhia, a legendary Kathak dancer followed by her mother, has inspired her a lot.

In times of stress, Ashima likes to dance.

Ashima’s life mantra is to follow her heart with pure intentions and honesty.
