Dr. Arvinder Singh is the Director of the Arth Group of Companies. He also heads Arth Diagnostics- the iconic number one diagnostics centre in Udaipur doing diagnostic tests, MRIs, CT Scans, Sonography etc. Recently he has ventured into a new business-Arth Skin and Fitness which is providing a new concept of medical aesthetics to the people of Udaipur with international level brands and experts. He has also started a world class gymnasium providing all types of fitness training.
Arvinder’s childhood was not good as he got affected by polio when he was just eight months old. He could not walk till he was in the 9th standard. Only after he had two surgeries was he able to walk with crutches. He belonged to a middle class family and his parents were school principals. Owing to his disability his father insisted on him studying in his father’s school which was a Hindi medium school. So, his entire school studies were in Hindi medium. As he was admitted to hospitals several times due to multiple problems and underwent several surgeries, he developed an inclination to become a doctor and break the taboo. And when he passed PMT, completed his medical studies, he was delighted at his journey from a patient to a doctor.
He says all life’s struggles teach you something. He had got admission in one of India’s top medical colleges the King George Medical College. But, as he had come from Hindi medium, first year in medical college was a big challenge for him. With his determination and hard work he learnt English and subsequently passed MBBS with flying colours.
Arvinder thinks that earlier doctors were produced in only government colleges. But, as demand for doctors was high, private medical colleges were also established. As a result of that now plenty of doctors are coming. Arvinder laments that due to this, respect for doctors is declining. Their paychecks are also decreasing and also violence against doctors is rising.
Arvinder feels that with technology taking a big leap, a doctor’s role has undergone a change. Many intelligent decisions are now taken by Artificial Intelligence. Now, doctors should concentrate more on being empathetic towards patients. Also, as the medical profession has become business now, they should also be more aware of laws related to the medical field. They should also learn aspects of management, especially HRM and Marketing.
In 1999, Arvinder came to Udaipur and started a diagnostic centre here which was doing well. In 2003, a renowned MNC Raymond Diagnostics approached him and joined hands with him to expand and upgrade his centre. They suggested to Arvinder that as he had a knack for management he should go for formal management training. Inspired by that he appeared in CAT, passed it and went to IIM Indore to do his management course which he passed with a Gold medal in 2009. In between, due to some reasons, he broke away from Raymond and continued his centre independently. In 2011, he was approached by the famous group Dr. Lal’s Pathlabs and he tied up with them. He even joined the company as National Head and VP. But, he somehow did not like the corporate culture and quit the job. He resigned, came back to Udaipur and started Arth Diagnostics afresh in a new premises. Arth Diagnostics has been a great success story since. He says as expansion is the law of nature he has just started his new skin and fitness venture catering to body contouring and shaping. He has also recently completed his LLB.
Covid time was a big challenge for him and his centre. His staff and doctors were afraid to come to work. He had to talk to them, convince and motivate them that this was a time when society needed them more and they cannot run away from their duty. He implemented many safety protocols and they all worked with utmost protection possible. They also had to remain away from their families for two to three months.
His advice for newcomers to any profession is to be passionate about their work. He also stresses the need to develop as many skills as you can. He says that if you love your job or profession, then be focused and creative, set your goals and then go after them and success will surely follow.
Talking about education he says education is useless without wisdom. Also, in his opinion, experience teaches us many things. He says you don’t have to make the mistakes yourself to learn from them, you should learn from others’ mistakes.
When asked about his role models he says role models keep changing in life. Initially, his role models were his parents. Then, when he was in school his teachers were his role models. But, as he grew up he was influenced by Osho’s teachings and philosophy. From Osho’s preachings he learnt how to remain cool and calm and how to listen to his inner voice. He was also inspired by Anthony Robins’s book ‘Awaken The Giant Within’. In fact, it was after reading this book that he took the decision to quit his job with a package of 60 lakhs to set up his own business.
If he is taken back in time in a time machine he would not want to change anything as he takes life as it comes.
Talking about leadership, he says he can only say that 200 people work under him and anyone of them can reach him directly. He believes that anyone who gets attached to you will only continue if his interests are served, if he gets value.
In his free time, Arvinder watches OTT series or reads books. He also does meditation. He has also subscribed to many online training programmes and keeps on learning from them.
His life mantra is ‘Set your own goals’ otherwise you will end up working for other people’s goals.
