Anita Sharma is a leading exponent of the “Sattriya” dance form from Assam. She has been practicing and teaching dance for the past four decades. She is the founder of a dance academy named "Abhinaya."
Anita is the recipient of the 2014 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. She also holds a master's degree in Assamese literature.
Remembering her childhood, Anita says she was born into a distinguished family with a rich cultural heritage. Anita was initiated into the field of Sattriya when she was barely seven years old. She had her early training under the late Guru Roseswar Saikia Barbayan. During her childhood, she met Guru Garima Hazarika, under whom she started learning Odissi dance. She worked on various dance projects with her and learned different aspects of the dance field.
Describing her professional journey, Anita says that in 2001 she started practicing Sattriya dance professionally. She had a wonderful experience during her learning with her Guru Padmashree Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami.
When asked about her regrets, Anita says she should have paid more attention to staying disciplined and focused on dance during her student years.
Speaking about her accomplishments, Anita says she feels proud of herself when she looks back and sees herself playing different roles as a daughter, wife, mother, and friend along with her dance. She feels accomplished whenever she successfully manages her dance performances with her team.
When asked about her role models, Anita says she considers her parents as her role models. From them, she learned how to live life with discipline and dedication. She also looks up to her Guru Garima Hazarika.
Anita states that dance is her strength and motivator for dealing with stress, and that it helps her stay calm and at peace.
Anita’s life mantra is "love yourself first and be a good human being."
