A dance instructor, Amritprava Mahanta learned classical dance and music from her family. She achieved significant milestones, including releasing her debut album Baxobi and choreographing traditional Assamese songs. Despite challenges, Mahanta draws inspiration from her parents and brother, finding peace in her passion for dance and music.

Amritprava Mahanta is a Dance Instructor at Barnali Dance Academy in Guwahati, Assam. She was nurtured in an environment steeped in culture and artistry. Her journey into the world of classical dance and music began at home, where she learned Kathak and Sattriya from her mother, a revered artist herself.

Growing up in a family of artists, Amritprava was surrounded by the rhythms and melodies of traditional Indian arts, which shaped her deeply.

Her mother inspired  her to do a Diploma in Classical Dance, while her maternal uncle and guru, Joy Prakash Medhi, guided her through her Diploma in Hindustani Classical Music. Amritprava also pursued a Diploma in Borgeet, a traditional folk song of Assam, further enriching her cultural repertoire.

Reflecting on her childhood, Amritprava Mahanta fondly recalls beginning her journey in dance and music at the tender age of three. The rich cultural background she was raised in made her childhood a joyous experience, filled with music and dance. She had the privilege of participating in workshops with legendary figures like Pt. Birju Maharaj, Guru Rajendra Gangani, and Guru Jatin Goswami, which further honed her skills.

Born in a small town in Assam, Amritprava Mahanta completed her secondary education there before moving to Guwahati. She completed her twelfth grade at Cotton College and graduated from Handique Girls' College. Her time at Handique Girls' College was marked by remarkable achievements; she set a record as the best singer and dancer, earning recognition that still brings her pride. She lent her voice to an Assamese film and several advertisements, marking significant milestones in her career. In 2018, she released her debut album, Baxobi, and has since choreographed numerous Bihu and Sattriya songs, showcasing her versatility and creativity.

Mahanta’s journey has not been without its challenges. She candidly shares that she encountered many obstacles along the way but relied on her deep cultural experiences to overcome them. She acknowledges the mistakes she has made in life, emphasizing the importance of learning from them and not repeating them.

Her parents, who taught her the arts of singing and dancing, remain her greatest role models. Amritprava Mahanta feels blessed to have had their unwavering support and encouragement throughout her journey. Her brother, a music director who composed music for her songs, also serves as a source of inspiration.

Amritprava Mahanta finds mental peace in her work, which she describes as her true passion. Dancing and singing are not just professions but sources of joy and fulfilment for her. To manage stress, she turns to meditation and other creative activities, which help her maintain balance in her life.

Mahanta’s life mantra is to be happy and to continue working diligently without worrying about the outcomes. She is deeply committed to sharing her knowledge and spreading her art to those in need, always striving to help others through her cultural endeavours.
