Amit Sharma is the Deputy Controller at Civil Defence in Udaipur.
Amit was born and brought up in Ajmer. He began his career as a sub-inspector of wireless in Bharatpur. During the Kargil War, Bharatpur was an ammunition center. Unfortunately, the center had a blast. Amit worked for three days and three nights continuously during that time to sustain communication and provide relief to civilians affected by the blast. In his career, he even faced bomb blasts and rescued people along with his team during such emergencies. He has experience leading effective and safe evacuations. Moreover, he is also involved in spreading general awareness about disaster protocols and emergencies.
Subsequently, he was promoted to Civil Defence Store Incharge and Inspector. Once, he had to work with the NCC and evacuate civilians trapped in a flood at night. It was a great challenge for him and his men, but they were successful in evacuating and rescuing the people and even animals trapped in the floodwaters.
Sharing the key skills one must possess in order to join civil Defence, Amit says the ability to work under pressure, administration skills, and quick and rational decision-making are some of them. Furthermore, patience is a must-have, as some rescue operations may take days, continues Amit. He adds that one must be full of motivation and keep boosting the morale of his fellow comrades on the field.
The job includes continuous work and mobilization of manpower to handle the mortalities and casualties on-field and identify the individuals who have died, says Amit. He believes that work in this job never stops. Moreover, one should always pursue their training seriously before actually beginning their career in this field.
His mother was a teacher, and his father was an advocate. As such, there used to be no one to monitor him when he was a child. So he and his sister used to leap from one terrace to another. He feels it was very risky as an adult now, but looking back, it was one of his precious childhood memories. He believes that the thrill of taking risks and the motivation to work in a civil defence job developed from his childhood mischief itself. He was a good basketball player in school and still plays the sport to this day.
During COVID 19, Amit organized volunteers. In his humble belief, civil defence is “of the civilian, by the civilian, and for the civilian ''. One chooses this profession because they have previously worked in humanitarian organizations like NSS, NGOs, etc. According to him, doctors, nurses, the police force, and civil defence personnel were at the forefront of this operation against the deadly disease. Many ambulances were mobilized by the Department of Civil Defence.
Maintaining effective precautions was one of the most important aspects of the operation. Cooperation with the police was established for effective personnel planning and assistance with abiding by standard protocol. He is proud to have risked his life to save lives, which are very important to him as a person who is diligent about his duties to serve the nation in times of need.
His role models are his parents, especially his mother. His mother was a hardworking and powerful woman. Despite having a job, she always took care of him and his sister. Another role model was his mathematics teacher in class 11. His guidance and life stories used to inspire him during his school days.
In his professional life, his role model is Amar Singh Rathore, the Chief Warden of the Civil Defence Service, Udaipur. He was very supportive of Amit when he joined as a trainee. His endurance to work non-stop on the field and his vast knowledge and experience always inspire Amit.
On a concluding note, he advises that one should not fear problems. One should not hesitate to face challenges. One must always face them, learn from them, and move forward towards their goal. Every moment is a learning moment in life. He believes that it is best to always be positive, no matter what.
