Amit Gaurav is the owner of ‘My Design Story’ studio in Udaipur that deals in architectural consultancy including – design, structural design, interior design, etc. His firm has been operating for the last six years, and he has ten years of experience in the industry. He has worked on various projects, including residential and commercial buildings, and has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality designs that meet his clients' needs.
Apart from his architecture field, Amit also has a keen interest in acting and has even acted in a few short films. He has completed an acting course from Anupam Kher’s ‘Actor Prepares’ academy in Mumbai. Recently, he has completed producing and acting in a short film. He has also co-authored a book named ‘Einstein's Tongue’.
Describing his journey, Amit says he was inspired by his uncle, who himself was an architect and encouraged Amit to pursue a career in architecture. He completed his Bachelors in Architecture from Pillai College of Architecture, Mumbai and his Masters from the UK. Since childhood, he had been interested in creative activities such as painting and sculpture. This passion for creativity led him to explore various artistic mediums, including acting and filmmaking. Amit's diverse interests have not only shaped his career in architecture but have also influenced his ventures in the field of acting and writing.
Remembering his childhood, Amit says his schooling was done from various places, living in different boarding schools in Pilani, Mt. Abu, Udaipur, Mumbai, and the UK. He feels grateful that his parents decided to keep him in boarding schools, as it shaped his personality and gave him lots of experiences. Amit returned to Udaipur to live with his parents after all these years of living alone. He joined an architecture firm and started working on various projects. He worked with the firm for three years, and then he established his own architecture firm named ‘My Design Stories’.
When asked about his role models, Amit says he considers his mother as his role model, who has instilled the values of humanity, loyalty, and trust in him. She has always been there to support and guide him through every phase of his life.
Speaking about his struggles, Amit says that there is nothing called a struggle; all they are, are learnings and opportunities for growth. He believes that every challenge he faces is a chance to develop new skills and gain valuable experience. Amit sees these ‘struggles’ as stepping stones towards achieving his goals, rather than obstacles holding him back.
To the aspirants who want to follow the field of architecture, Amit says that the field is not easy; it requires constant efforts to portray the vision of the architect. There will be many challenges in terms of creativity, clients, competition, and even your own staff. However, Amit believes that these challenges are what make the field of architecture exciting and rewarding. He advises aspiring architects to embrace these challenges and use them as opportunities to push their boundaries and create truly innovative designs. As the work of an architect is visible in the built environment, it is essential to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies to produce high-quality designs that meet the needs of clients and society.
Comparing education and experience, Amit says that for him, education and experience are both equally important. He believes that a strong educational foundation provides us with the necessary knowledge and skills, while practical experience allows architects to apply and refine their abilities in real-world scenarios. Amit emphasizes the importance of continuously learning and seeking opportunities to gain hands-on experience in order to excel in the field of architecture.
Lastly, he advises everyone to be humans first and then an architect, as understanding the needs and desires of people is crucial in creating functional and meaningful spaces. By prioritizing empathy and human connection, architects can create designs that truly enhance the lives of those who inhabit the houses designed for them.
