Know your roots, stay rooted and stay Indian.
Know your roots, stay rooted and stay Indian.
Ameera Patankar is a Lead Dancer, Trainer and Event Coordinator at Nadroop in Pune. She is also a Choreographer and Kathak Performer.
Ameera reveals that she works for her guru's institute, which goes by the name ‘Nadroop’. While ‘Nad’ represents sound, ‘Roop’ represents form.
Reflecting on her childhood, Ameera recalls that she had always enjoyed dancing, and her mother eventually signed her up for a dance class taught by Guru Shama Bhate. She took up dancing as a hobby. She was the Cultural and Dance Secretary at her college in addition to being a dancer. However, she dropped the dance class in the tenth grade to focus on her education, and didn't learn dance for six years. She decided to pursue a career in classical dance after finishing her college.
Talking about her achievements, Ameera says that when someone finds enjoyment in her dancing and footwork, it is her proudest accomplishment. She has performed at a number of esteemed venues, including the Raza Foundation, RainDrop Festival, Delhi's Kathak Mahotsav, and many more. She has given solo and ensemble performances at most of the nation's largest classical dance stages. She danced in the Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav in Pune, Mehr, Nishagandhi Dance Festival, Natarani Festival, Khajuraho Dance Festival, and other events as the lead dancer for Nadroop troupe. She is grateful to have Nadroop as a support system.
Born and raised in Pune, Ameera received a lot of exposure to different cultures while attending a convent school. She took part in a variety of cultural activities while completing her postsecondary education at Fergusson College. In terms of experiences, she feels that her childhood was rather fulfilling. She treasures and recalls the times she spent touring and competing in quizzes with her parents. Experiences taught her a lot. She completed her TY in Economics and eleventh and twelfth in Arts. She later pursued a Master Degree in Kathak and studied Commercial French up to the C1 level.
When asked about her role models, Ameera says the two persons in her life whom she looks up to are her father and her guru Shama Bhate. She says that because they were both naturally brilliant and hard workers, they were comparable. She witnessed her father toiling and enjoying every minute of his workday. Her guru won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and has advanced in life on her own initiative and through hard effort.
Ameera finds great inspiration and motivation in the quote, "Courage is not always a bold and heroic act, it is often a gentle voice within you that says let's try again." "Raindrops on roses, Whiskers on kittens" is another tune she enjoys listening to.
Ameera states that because she came from a comfortable household, she never had to suffer. However, she took her time in deciding to pursue a career in Kathak. She took four or five years to fully comprehend the traditional dance culture. She therefore had difficulty in the beginning understanding and mastering footwork and classical music. To acquire the footwork and to know ‘Lay and Taal’, she had to put in a lot of effort and practise for a long time.
Ameera advises dance aspirants not to dance for the sole purpose of creating an Instagram reel. Dancing is vital because you like it, it brings you joy, and it allows you to give it your all every day. Always have faith in your guru , never be afraid to express your creativity, but always remember your roots.
She counsels the young people to remember their cultural roots. She claims that people are not accepting their religion and culture in the modern days and are not proud of their mythology. According to her, being Indian means having many talents, being dynamic, lively, and open. Thus, always be grateful for your motherland and be proud for being an Indian.
