Abid Hussain is an author, poet and novelist. He has many books to his credit. His writings have been published in many Urdu magazines. He was also the Chairman of the Central Board of Dawoodi Bohra Community and now he is a patron of the same. He says he has also always championed the reformist movement in the Dawoodi Bohra Community.
Abid was born in Udaipur. He studied at Fatah School and then he went to MB College for his further studies.
Abid began his professional career in 1958 with the Rajasthan Sahitya Academy. In 1988, when he was the publication officer in the Urdu Department there, he left it. But, even after leaving the academy, he kept serving it and was also a member of various committees of the academy and also served as its Vice-Chairman.
Abid is also a social worker and reformist. He has worked to uplift and elevate the underprivileged sections of the Bohra Community. He arranged for children’s studies and medical facilities for those belonging to the community.
Abid shares that in his time self-employed people used to be given more importance. He was also forced to study Commerce though he was interested in Science. Later he took to Literature as he was interested in it since his childhood itself. When he was in his 8th std., he wrote his first poem and received appreciation for it. He would also participate in Kavi sammelans and symposiums and recite his poems.
He also penned down the Urdu Version of Radha-Krishna poetry written by Satyaprakash Joshi. He would also recite this poetry in the Kavi sammelans he would participate in.
Abid shares that he had kept all his manuscripts at his father’s godown and all of them got washed away due to rain. It was really tragic for him.
Abid believes that all religions are good and at the core of every religion it is about serving humanity. He had to face opposition from his religious masters because of his views and understanding of the religion.
During the municipal corporation elections in 1970, he also formed the Saif committee to educate the girls and women of the Bohra Community and he also provided books and other resources to the needy girls.
He also opened a bank by the name Udaipur Urban Improvement Bank and today it finds its branches in not just Udaipur but different areas like Fathenagar, Mavli etc.
Abid shares that the Bohra Community’s reformist movement garnered widespread recognition and support from people from different countries. It spread to the UK, the US, Mauritius and Africa too. Besides, he also worked to establish harmony among people of different religious faiths.
Abid also acknowledges the sacrifices of women and of all the people of the community to carry out the reformist movement and make it successful.
Abid shares that the Quarn grants equal rights to both women and men and he firmly raised the voices of the people of his community to grant equal opportunities to all. He also got recognition and many awards from his community and many other organisations of the likes of Urdu Research Institute, Kota, Rajasthan Sahitya Academy, Maharashtra Rajya Sahitya Academy etc.
