Whatever you do, do it with all your heart and honesty.
Abhik Mukherjee is a sitar player. For the past 39 years, he has been playing the musical instrument.
Describing his childhood, Abhik says that he was born into a family of artists and musicians, though none of them were professionals. When he was six years old, his father, who was also a sitar player, sent him to a music institute to learn how to play the instrument. He initially received training from Vimal Chatterjee, his instructor, and later from Pandit Kashinath Mukherjee.
He still remembers that he and his family used to enjoy the company of a lot of musicians, singers, and other instrument players who would come over to his house regularly.
Describing his journey, Abhik says that he started performing professionally when he was just seventeen years old. He also recorded for commercial purposes. After some time, he considered leaving Kolkata to pursue additional music projects. He began receiving assignments from Delhi and Mumbai. He worked as a school music teacher for three years. After that, he made the move to Mumbai, where he learned that life was not always easy. Despite this, he was happy to meet wonderful individuals who assisted him in making his path.
Discussing his mistakes, Abhik says that finding one's own mistakes in the music line and continually correcting them makes a musician more modest. He recalls a time when his guru helped him improve his performance by hinting at his minor mistake during the performance. He says it's great to have some mentor or guru in life who can perceive your slip-ups and let you rectify them to upgrade your abilities.
Talking about his accomplishments, Abhik says that even though he has performed on many reputable platforms and been featured in publications and magazines, he does not consider these to be achievements because the journey is more important to him.
When asked about his role models, Abhik says that Ustaad Vilayat Khan, a famous musician, is one of his role models. Ustaad Raees Khan and Ustaad Ali Akbar Khan also inspire him a lot. He also gets his motivation to live a happy life in a simple way from his parents and family.
Abhik enjoys painting and drawing in his spare time. He also enjoys watching football games and is a huge football fan. He and his wife frequently trek through thick forests for walks. He also reads a lot and enjoys spending time with good books.
Abhik enjoys long walks and listening to music to relieve stress and achieve mental calm.
Trying to live in the present moment is Abhik's life mantra. He asserts that the present becomes the past and the future emerges from the present. Therefore, he believes that the future will also be happy if the present is happy.
The one piece of advice that Abhik has for the younger generation is that if you do anything with all of your heart and honesty, it will pay off.
